Alexander Shabalov beat Sergey Kudrin in the last round of the Frank K. Berry U.S. Championship in Stillwater, Okla., to win the tournament and claim the title of U.S. champion. Alexander Onischuk, last year’s champion, had a chance to tie for first, but he was held to a draw in the last round by Boris Gulko. Onischuk finished second and Gregory Kaidanov, Yury Shulman Julio Becerra finished in a tie for third. Alex was preparing for the Dragon Sicilian, Kudrin's pet system with Black.
